The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Good
Very nearly everything. Lets start with the acting. Martin Freeman is great. He brings such (cliché alert) charm and life to the character. He delivers his performance with such excellence, that he really steals large parts of the film. Andy Serkis (Gollum/Smeagol) returns, snatching the film and creating a wonderful highlight with the fantastic riddles scene. Other good performances come from Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Christopher Lee (Saruman) and Richard Armitage (Thorin).
The visuals (as shown throughout the entire film) are also spectacular. Never has a film been more crisp or clear. I saw it in 48fps. It blew my mind. Nothing was blurry, I could see every detail of the CGI orcs and of all the other characters.
Finally, the material it has been adapted from is genius, Tolkien almost seems to have written the books with these films in mind!
The only bad thing I could think of was the achingly slow start. Jackson spends so much time setting the film up that you almost become bored by it. As soon as they take off, however, everything gets a whole lot better.
So to sum up, The Hobbit is a MUST-SEE, particularly if you plan to watch it in the new high frame rate (HFR). This will truly enhance your experience. Some may dislike it's sprawling nature, but it's enjoyable and action-packed enough to compensate.
